David Cheifetz

Based in Washington state, David Cheifetz trained in traditional representational painting and has built his career around contemporary realism.

Between the Saltwater and the Sea Strand – Over the past several years, I have followed an unexpected and powerful yearning to explore pure abstraction, to create with emotion and instinct rather than a more rational approach, and in that process, to become more attuned to the whispers of the muse. This painting is a result of this practice-an artwork that lands somewhere between pure abstraction and my version of realism. Inspired by a lifelong obsession with the lyrics from Simon and Garfunkel, the portrait in this painting is a broken seam in reality (or unreality), a peeking out from another dimension, a rip in time, something solid and real appearing where nothing solid should exist.
